The Royal hotel was founded 1920 when Gustaaf De Meyer and his wife started Pension De Meyer. Pension De Meyer was located in the street at the back of the hotel. Today the fitness and spa are still located in this building. Afterwards the son of Gustraaf, Michel, continued the business.
Michel De Meyer was a big entrepreneur. Thanks to him the Royal hotel arised in 1920 in the Zeelaan at the current location of the hotel. Over the years he developed the hotel as it grew in size and facilities. Michel died at the age of 58 and was succeeded by his son, Jean-Jacques, and his mother, Madeleine Decroos. Jean-Jacques got married with his wife Carine Vanlandeghem. Under their command the hotel passed through some significant renovations which resulted in an up-to-date three star hotel.
In 2008, Jean-Jacques died, and today the hotel is exploited by his wife and two children. Every day the family and their team try to bring the hotel to a higher level to satisfy the modern traveller.
